A Murray’s Village man who sustained a broken leg as he fled when gunmen attacked and killed another villager on June 16 was shot and killed in his community Friday night.
The death of Ronald Millington takes the homicide count this year to 50, five short of last year’s record-setting 55.
It came four days after acting Commissioner of Police Enville Williams unveiled his new strategy to tackle serious crime in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
iWitness News understands that Millington was shot and died at the scene near the Apostolic Faith Church in Murray’s Village on his way home around 10:20 p.m.
He had been using crutches since he injured his leg on June 16 when he jumped over a riverbank in Murray’s Village when gunmen attacked and killed Zeno Lee aka Sarge, two months after his young brother Zenroy Lee aka Chucky, 31 was killed in the community.
Police had identified Romano Pompey aka No Mercy, 35, as Zenroy’s killer.
They shot and killed Pompey in Redemption Sharpes about three hours after Zenroy’s death, with officers alleging that Pompey had pointed a gun at them.
Police have charged Lemar Isaacs aka Chak, 22, unemployed, of McKies Hill, with murder in connection with Zeno Lee’s death.
Issacs is in prison awaiting a preliminary inquiry into the murder charge. He and his co-accused, all of whom have been granted bail, are also awaiting a preliminary inquiry into their alleged involvement in a heist at GECCU in South Rivers.
This is the second consecutive weekend in which SVG has recorded a homicide.
Last weekend, three men died while a fourth is in hospital after a shooting in Paul’s Avenue, the second mass shooting in the community this year.
The shooting last weekend was the second most deadly mass shooting in the nation’s recent history, following one that claimed five lives on July 19, 2023, in Kingstown.
On the weekend of Nov. 15-17, SVG recorded three homicides in as many days, one of two weekends that month in which the country recorded multiple homicides.
This year, in addition to Millington and the Lee brothers, there have been at least two other killings in the Murray’s Village-Paul Over area, the borders between East and Central Kingstown.
On Oct. 29, Marilyn John was shot and killed in Paul Over three months after her son, Jomarl John, was shot and killed in Pole Yard on July 13.
Marilyn John lived on the ground floor of a house where Dwayne Jacobs, 34, was attacked with a barrage of gunshots during which he jumped out of the house.
Police responded to the initial reports but did not meet Jacobs at home. When they returned to the scene the following morning, officers found Jacobs’ bullet-riddled body along the bank of a river near his home in Paul Over, a Central Kingstown community.
In a national address on Monday, the acting police chief said his new crime-fighting strategies include using the cybercrime law to track criminal activities, dismantling firearm smuggling rings, a new inter-agency internal security mechanism that includes cooperation with the prisons, and ensuring that no one benefits from crime.
Williams said there has been increased police presence in targeted areas as patrols in hot spots have been intensified to provide “a strong deterrent to criminal activities and ensure rapid response to incidents.
“With the Christmas season upon us, we are deploying greater police presence to our communities and commercial areas to ensure public safety and to maintain order during this heightened activity period.”
While the killings continue the Minister of National Security continues to globe trot unabashed, unscaved and seemingly unconcerned.
