Vincentian cultural practitioner Nisha Hope will officially launch a new heritage textile titled “HERO”, a fabric design created in honour of Joseph Chatoyer, the first and only National Hero of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).
The launch will take place on Saturday – National Heroes Day — in the Garifuna community of Greiggs, under the auspices of the Greiggs Garifuna Council, bringing together cultural practitioners, community members, and supporters of Vincentian heritage.
The HERO line is inspired by the life and legacy of Joseph Chatoyer, National Hero of SVG and Paramount Chief of the Garifuna people.
“This work is created with cultural respect and historical intention,” Hope said in a press release.
“The HERO fabric serves as the foundation of the launch with a mini collection, incorporating imagery inspired by the historic likeness of Chatoyer, often depicted with his iconic pipe — a visual associated with leadership, reflection, and resistance during the late 18th-century struggle against colonial forces.”
Hope collaborated with Vincentian designer Ossie Small, who translated the fabric into a series of fashion pieces and accessories, demonstrating how heritage textiles can move from cultural design into contemporary Caribbean fashion.
The initiative reflects a broader effort to use creative expression to preserve and celebrate Vincentian history. Through the HERO textile and the creation of a collection, the designers aim to ensure that Chatoyer’s legacy remains visible, relevant, and proudly represented in modern cultural spaces.
“This work is about remembrance and respect,” Hope said. “Chatoyer represents resistance, leadership, and identity for our people. Through design and fashion, we keep that legacy alive and visible.”
Saturday launch event in Greiggs will feature the unveiling of the HERO fabric, presentations of the fashion pieces created from the textile, and a cultural gathering recognising the continued importance of Garifuna heritage in SVG.
It commences at 2 p.m.

This is a great initiative and a creative way to keep our Hero Chatoyer alive in the minds of adults and children. Congratulations to Ms. Hope
Is there historical evidence of Joseph Chatoyer?
