Central Leeward MP, Orando Brewster, has outlined his plans for the constituency should he be elected to a second five-year term in office.
“Let me tell alyo something. … if alyo think Sandals was good, look out for what is coming to Central Leeward,” he said as the ruling Unity Labour Party kicked off its campaign for the general election in Layou on Saturday.
“We have more hotels to build. We have more scholarships to give away. We have more healthcare to improve. And don’t talk about your house, because I ain’t sleeping until every last house gets fixed in St. Vincent and the Grenadines,” said Brewster, who is also the minister of housing.
He said the ULP is the only party in the country “that you can put your pot on the fire and know that this party is going to come true to help you, the people of St Vincent and the Grenadines”.
Brewster, a preacher who has a first degree in medicine, is facing a challenge from the opposition New Democratic Party’s Conroy Huggins, a preacher, agronomist and former teacher.
In May, Huggins unveiled “Vision 2025-2035”, his 10-year plan for the constituency, which the ULP has been representing for 30 years.
Brewster, however, said Huggins had not told constituents about his party’s plans.
“I can tell all you, just now in Peters Hope, we going see development of housing for young professionals. Right here, the next village tournament in Layou, we’re playing under floodlights.”
He said a ULP administration will also fix up the Buccament Bay Playing Field “because we need another running track on the Leeward side of the island so we athletes and them ain’t have to go Diamond…”
Brewster told party supporters that there was not much land left in Layou, but the prime minister had just told him that he had instructed the chief surveyor regarding lands on Ridge Side
“… so more lands are coming to Central Leeward; we will big you up down here,” Brewster said.
“So, my people, I talking plans. I don’t come with a camera and report,” he said, referring to the videos that Huggins has produced, highlighting issues in the constituency.
“I telling you we’re gonna do for you. We’ve done good work thus far, but we have more work to do,” he said.
Brewster said he knows that the population of Barrouallie is growing fast.
“So, I have asked the comrade leader that in our next term, we are going to deliver a state-of-the-art early childhood facility in Barrouallie,” Brewster said.
He said he has told the prime minister and the cabinet that his ministry will not be able to repair before the election all the houses that it plans to under the ongoing programme.
“You know, we don’t lie to you, we does come and we does tell you the truth,” said Brewster who falsely said at the same rally that instead of joining with the government to fight crime, the opposition had erected a billboard advertising crime.
The truth is that the government had repeatedly rejected the opposition’s offer to work together to fight crime.
“You know, we does tell alyo the truth. We nah go lie. We nah go lie like the other guys,” Brewster said.
“We said that we will not finish all of the houses before election. But you know, there’s only one party in this country that will continue with the rebuilding process, and that party is Labour!” he said.
General elections are widely expected by November, ahead of the February 2026 constitutional deadline.
