Edgar Cruickshank, a former staunch supporter of the ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP), was among several persons injured when a vehicle came into contact with the crowd at a political meeting of the main opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) in Clare Valley Saturday night.
The incident, which brought the meeting to a premature end, occurred as Leader of the Opposition and President of the NDP Arnhim Eustace was addressing the crowd.
Cruickshank, a resident of Top Questelles and former ULP South Leeward Constituency Council member, was among the persons rushed to hospital, but I-Witness News has so far been unable to verify their identities or the extent of their injuries.
At least six persons where injured, and a person at the meeting who helped the injured told I-Witness News that the former ULP activist “is/was in bad shape”.
Private and police vehicles and ambulances were used to take the injured to hospital.
Cruickshank had expressed disappointment in Sen. Jomo Thomas emerging as the lead contender for the nod as the ULP’s South Leeward candidate in the next general elections, which must be held by March 28, 2016, but are widely expected by December 2015.
He did not attend the constituency conference in July at which Grenville Williams, who Cruickshank supported for the post, nominated Thomas to be the candidate — seemingly with little magnanimity, notwithstanding his oral endorsement.

After the formalisation of Thomas’ candidacy, Cruickshank threw his support being the NDP’s Nigel “Nature” Stevenson, who is seeking a second term as MP for South Leeward, where Clare Valley is located.
Stephenson, gave Cruickshank a special welcome at the meeting on Saturday, saying, “In the audience tonight, there is another first, because one of the persons who was instrumental in ensuring that Labour keep (sic) its base in South Leeward and also throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines, tonight he is now in the audience, not dressed in red [but supporting the New Democratic Party.”
The vehicle involved in the incident was a car, registration number P7516, and was driven by a male.

So sad to hear and may his soul rest in perfect peace. Not withstanding that, God don’t like ugly, this got to be a warning to those who wish to see the NDP in power in SVG. God put up men and women and parties to govern, ULP was place there by God and only God will remove the ULP. Cruckshank was not a genuine ULP if he was he would have supported whoever the candidate that is nominated imagine the man he was backing for nomination withdrew himself and throw his wait behind another why should he get upset over that and switch allegiance. As I said a message is been sent, people take warning, the NDP is not the party for SVG at this stage.

This is so very sad. Most unfortunate incident. I extend deepest sympathies to the family memebers and friends of the late Mr. Edgar Cruickshank. I also pray for a speedy and complete recovery of those who were injured.

The end of the day, if the guy want to Support ULP, NDP, Green Party it is HIS choice. You carry on as though the man is in some marriage or something. The immaturity of people to just do vicious acts as this which would be more common place in Syria, North Korea or Russia is a joke. I am saddened that such a tradegy has turned into a political battle. Is the family being considered at this time? God I pray for the family at this time that they will be lifted up and pray that the negatives will stop. Let the period of mourning be uplifted and the good be seen. Most of us would not want this for anyone in our families. GOD is the only big man here! Pray and stand by the Cruickshank family at this time. This unexpected death is not easy for them. This is very shameful that svg have come to this that we act so selfish and and show no regard to our fellow man that we can talk such trash in the name of party when someone is dead and his family is grieving. The people of svg does not to put up with this b***sht. The last time i checked, we live in a democratic society and it’s the man’s right to follow what party he wishes, now he pays the ultimate for his freedom of expression. As vinventians, we should all throw our full support behind his family, show unity and follow the example of the US and have a massive demonstration in kingstown, cause to alot of us, this was politically motivated, just like what they did to glen jackson, the servant of the lord etc. My heart goes out to his family, may he rest in peace.
