Police recovered one Glock pistol, 10 rounds of 9mm ammunition, one firearm magazine, a substantial amount of cash, including foreign currency, and a quantity of a substance suspected to be cocaine at the home of Keith “Devon” James, who was shot and killed in Calliaqua on Friday night.
“The recovered items are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation, and their relevance to the fatal shooting has not yet been determined,” police said in a statement on Saturday.
“Investigators are pursuing several lines of inquiry and are examining all relevant circumstances that may assist in determining the motive and identifying the person or persons responsible.”
The statement said police received a report of the shooting at approximately 8:06 p.m. on Friday.
Officers responded to the scene near the Anglican Church, where they met James, a 37-year-old resident of Golden Vale, Calliaqua, lying motionless on the left side of the road.
Initial reports were that James, a former national footballer, had just returned home when he was shot and killed after exiting a vehicle.
Residents have speculated that the killer might have been waiting for James as a dark-coloured vehicle was seen leaving the scene shortly after the shooting.
A doctor later pronounced him dead at the scene, where police recovered five spent 9mm shells.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted on the body.
“The Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force extends condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time. The Force urges members of the public to refrain from speculation and to allow the investigative process to take its course,” police said.
“Anyone with information that can assist with this investigation is asked to contact the Criminal Investigations Department/Major Crimes Unit at 456-1810, Police Control at 457-1211, Police Emergency at 911/999, or the nearest police station. All information received will be treated with the strictest confidence.”
James’ death brings the homicide count in St. Vincent and the Grenadines so far this year to 15.
He is the fourth person shot and killed in the country in less than a month.
